The power of royals and vikings

Around 500 men were stationed at the fortress. It was an impressive demonstration of power, both to foreigners and nationally, as Trelleborg was intended to symbolize the establishment of a unified kingdom through military power. Harald Bluetooth cemented his power with Trelleborg and the other ring fortresses across the country. No one should be in any doubt about who ruled Denmark.

Trelleborg held its ground against an enemy attack

Trelleborg is the only one of Denmark's Viking ring fortresses to show signs of battle. For example, burnt-down gates, three mass graves containing skeletons and several weapons, including arrowheads, axes, and spears, have been found. One particularly special find is a shield, which is Denmark's only round shield from the Viking Age.

From Danish history to world heritage sites

In 2023, Trelleborg was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List along with four other Danish ring fortresses; Aggersborg near Limfjorden, Fyrkat near Hobro, Nonnebakken in Odense, and Borgring near Køge. The fortresses are recognized as unique examples of Denmark's rich history and an important step towards preserving our past for future generations and telling the story of the Vikings.
